RF Coaxial Connector – BNC Connector Introduction

RF Coaxial Connector – BNC Connector Introduction

BNC connector have a two-stud bayonet locking design, and has same interface with TNC connector. BNC connector supports with a large variety of coaxial cables like RG58, RG174, RG316, RG59.

50 ohm BNC connector was commonly used on 10base2 thin Ethernet networks, and now is used in radio and telecommunication.

75 ohm BNC connector is available for CATV, CCTV applications and is successfully work up to 1GHz.

Mechanical Feature:

BNC male

  • A rotated coupling nut with two locking caves symmetrically.
  • Male center contact
  • Silicon Rubber O-ring inside between coupling nut and outer contact
  • Insulator nestles up throughout against outer contact, and an air gap between center contact and insulator for 50 ohm BNC male
  • Reduced insulator in mating end, and an air gap between center and outer contacts for 75ohm BNC male

BNC female

  • Two symmetrical studs for lock mating.
  • Female center contact
  • Insulator surrounds female center contact wholly for 50 ohm BNC female
  • Part of female center contact doesn’t be surrounded by insulator and an air gap between center contact and outer contact for 75 ohm BNC female

How to judge BNC connectors’ feature from outline:

BNC connector right angle type:

BNC connector right angle type

The cable entry way or PCB terminated way is at 90 degrees against coupling way.

BNC connector straight type:

BNC connector straight type

The cable entry way and PCB terminated way is at 180 degrees to coupling way.

BNC connector female/ jack bulkhead type:

BNC female connector mate with BNC male connector by two studs, when the outer thread is available on body, the thread is for bulkhead mounting purpose with washer and nut.
1) Rear mount type bulkhead

BNC connector Rear mount type bulkhead

BNC rear mount bulkhead connector will go through the panel mounting hole toward the external of device from the internal, and mount it with washer and nut from outside.

2) Front mount type bulkhead

BNC connector Front mount type bulkhead

BNC front mount bulkhead connector will go through the panel hole toward the internal of device from the external, and mount it with washer and nut from inside.

BNC connector PCB connector:

BNC connector PCB connector

PCB type BNC connector normally has female body with 3.0 ~ 4.5mm legs length. legs and one contact will go through PCB vertically, and be soldered in rear side of PC board.

BNC connector female/ jack SMT type

SMT means surface mounting technology and is common used for tiny parts soldering. BNC connector has enough size to be operated by manual, so there is no BNC connector designed for SMT so far.

BNC connector cable connector:

BNC male and BNC female connector are commonly terminated with coaxial cable. The applicable coax cable diameter is from 1.8mm to 6.1mm. The BNC cable is popular antenna cable for CCTV, CATV and Radio systems.
