N connector is a threaded RF connector and commonly is used to join with coaxial cable. N connector was invented in 1940’s and comes in 50 ohm and 75 ohm impedance.
The 50 ohm N connector is widely used in the infrastructure of wireless base station and cellular base station, and the working frequency normally is from hundred MHz to 5.8GHz. The 75 ohm N connector can work up to 1.5GHz, and is primarily used in the infrastructure of cable TV systems.
Mechanical Feature:
N male
- Inner thread of 5/8-24UNEF-2B, Inner diameter is from 14.732mm to 14.986mm
- An air gap between center and outer contacts
- Outer diameter range is 19.5mm ~ 21.0mm
- Silicon Rubber O-ring inside
- Male center contact has dia. 1.60mm ~ 1.68mm for 50 ohm N male ; dia. 0.87mm ~ 0.91mm for 75 ohm N male
N female
- Outer thread of 5/8-24UNEF-2A with O.D. from 15.662mm ~ 15.844mm
- Female center contact
- Part of female contact doesn’t be surrounded by insulator for 50ohm and 75ohm N female
How to judge N connectors’ feature from outline:
N connector Male (Plug)
N plug has inner thread on coupling nut, and an air gap between N male center contact and outer contact. A silicon rubber O-ring exists between outer contact and coupling nut.
N male connector, 50 ohm V.S. 75 ohm
N connector Female (Jack)
N jack has outer thread with diameter about 15.6mm. Part of N female center contact doesn’t be surrounded by insulator.
N female connector, 50 ohm V.S. 75 ohm
N connector right angle type:
The cable entry way or PCB terminated way is at 90 degrees against coupling way.
N connector straight type:
The cable entry way and PCB terminated way is at 180 degrees to coupling way.
N connector female/ jack bulkhead type:
N female connector has 8mm length outer thread for mating with N plug connector. When the exposed outer thread is much longer than 8mm (normally is 22mm), the spare thread space will be used for bulkhead mounting with washer and nut.
1) Rear mount type bulkhead
N connector rear mount bulkhead type will go through the panel mounting hole toward the external of device from the internal, and mount it with washer and nut from outside.
2) Front mount type bulkhead
N connector front mount bulkhead type will go through the panel hole toward the internal of device from the external, and mount it with washer and nut from inside.
N connector PCB connector:
N connector commonly is used to join with RF coaxial cables, and there is no one N connector is designed to be terminated with PCB.
N connector female/ jack SMT type
N connector has big size and is much heavier than SMA connector, MCX connector, MMCX connector, and no SMT design so for.
N connector cable connector:
N plug and N jack connector are commonly terminated with coaxial cable. The applicable coax cable diameter range can be 1.13mm to 12.6mm. N cable is the most popular as N adaptor cable in the infrastructure of WiFi / WLAN system and GSM cellular system.
N jack connector 4holes flange mount:
4 thru holes on N connector’s flange will be exposed outside the device. Four screws are inserted into and have nuts to fix from the internal of enclosure.
