TNC connector is a threaded version of BNC connector, and the thread is 7/16”-28. With a medium size compared with SMA connector and N connector, TNC connector is commonly used in military radio telecommunication system.
Most TNC connectors are the 50 ohm type, but 75 ohm TNC connector also is available to join with 75ohm coaxial cable like RG6, RG59, RG179.
RP (Reverse Polarity) TNC is a variation of the TNC specification which reverses the polarity of the interface. This is usually achieved by incorporating the female contacts normally found in jacks into the plug, and the male contacts normally found in plugs into the jack. RP TNC connectors are widely used by WiFi or 2.4G WLAN equipment manufacturers.
Mechanical Feature:
TNC male
- Inner thread of 7/16-28UNEF-2B on coupling nut, Inner diameter is from 10.135mm to 10.337mm
- Male center contact
- Silicon Rubber O-ring inside
- Insulator nestles up throughout against outer contact, and an air gap between center contact and insulator for 50 ohm TNC male
- Reduced insulator in mating end, and an air gap between center and outer contacts for 75ohm TNC male
TNC female
- Outer thread of 7/16-28UNEF-2B with O.D. from 10.919~11.084mm for mating
- Female center contact
- Insulator surrounds female center contact wholly for 50 ohm TNC female
- Part of female center contact doesn’t be surrounded by insulator and an air gap between center contact and outer contact for 75 ohm TNC female
How to judge TNC connectors’ feature from outline:
TNC connector Male (Plug)
TNC plug has inner thread on coupling nut, and silicon rubber O-ring between coupling but and outer contact. The outer diameter of TNC male normally is about 14.5mm
TNC male connector, 50 ohm V.S. 75 ohm
TNC connector Female (Jack)
TNC female has outer thread with diameter about 11mm.
BNC female connector, 50 ohm V.S. 75 ohm
TNC connector right angle type:
The cable entry way or PCB terminated way is at 90 degrees against coupling way.
TNC connector straight type:
The cable entry way and PCB terminated way is in horizontal to coupling way.
TNC connector female/ jack bulkhead type:
TNC female connector has about 6.5mm length outer thread for mating with TNC male. When the exposed outer thread is much longer than 6.5mm or there is another thread on TNC body, we define it is bulkhead type for mounting onto panel with washer and nut.
1) Rear mount type bulkhead
TNC connector rear mount bulkhead type goes through the panel mounting hole toward the external of device from the internal, and mount it with washer and nut from outside.
2) Front mount type bulkhead
TNC connector front mount bulkhead type goes through the panel hole toward the internal of device from the external, and mount it with washer and nut from inside.
TNC connector PCB connector:
PCB type TNC connector normally has female body with 3.0 ~ 4.5mm legs length. legs and one contact will go through PCB vertically, and be soldered in rear side of PC board.
TNC connector female/ jack SMT type
SMT means surface mounting technology and is common used for tiny parts soldering. TNC connector has enough size to be operated by manual, so there is no TNC connector designed for SMT so far.
TNC connector cable connector:
TNC male and TNC female connector are commonly terminated with coaxial cable. The applicable coax cable diameter is from 0.81 to 6.1mm. TNC cable is popular antenna cable.
